Uhuru Overview
The Uhuru Institute for Social Development (TUI) is a social business that provides and connects cooperatives to a variety of services including but not limited to affordable financing, training and institutional development, ICT solutions for business, research, media services, business networking and learning conferences, policy and advocacy, youth leadership and entrepreneurship development with the aim of contributing to inclusive socio-economic transformation.
We run social businesses that expand our social impact outreach, deepen democratic practice, and protect human rights through providing urgently needed services to our clients. These enterprises include:
- Coop360 Network – that enables business networking and capacity building.
- CoopProfiler – a data processing, monitoring, and evaluation web and mobile app.
- SplendorERP – a cloud-based enterprise resource planning system.
- #NoExcuses – youth leadership & entrepreneurship camps, and learning caravans.
- Fanaka Finance – a finance company for financial literacy, affordable credit, and fund management.
- CoopTree – a green business promoting tree planting and energy conservation.
- theCooperator News – a magazine and voice for cooperative business model.
- ThinkTank – a people’s open space for free thinking and research on development alternatives and advocacy.
We work through agency agreements entered into with existing cooperatives, business associations, and community groups who join the Coop360 Network.
We accompanied the Kampala Civic Center Boda-Boda Motorcycle Transport Cooperative Society Ltd (KCCBT) from inception through registration to the growing cooperative it is to date. And the lessons from piloting the Freedom Fund products with them has opened great opportunity for affordable finance to this massive transport industry.
Our clients include Cooperatives, Village Savings and Loans Associations, Youth, other collective business associations, relevant government MDAs, Development Partners and Civil Society Organisations.
